Isn’t life beautiful!

I had a friend tell me something along the lines of “so little time, so much to do” the other day, and I really resonated with that. There are many things that I feel that way about. We are a busy culture! Timeframes and deadlines abound. Now, don’t get me wrong, some goals do have specific timelines that need to be met. You’re hungry? Better plan for the next meal! You’re moving? Well, you better pack up before you have to go! But many lifelong journeys are never ending, and to me, that’s the joy of the whole thing.

It’s certainly nice to have goals and ambitions for things you want to achieve in life, but don’t let a self-imposed timeline rush you and take the joy out of what it is you’re doing. After all, we are doing the thing to ultimately enjoy the thing we’re doing. Sure, we like the end result. The feeling of accomplishment is amazing and seeing the finished product can give amazing joy. But most of the time, it is the process along the way that really gives meaning to that end result. Imagine coming home excited to work on a puzzle and your partner/mom/dog shows you they completed it while you were away. Isn’t that the point of the puzzle? To complete the thing? I suppose, but the fun is doing it, not just completing it.

I’ve had this thought far too often when it comes to hobbies…especially with mycology. I see so many people in this community amass a HOARD of genetics, seemingly preparing for the sporepocalypse! And I see those same people follow a path similar to what I did when I was first starting out…collect a ton of super exciting genes to examine and work with, starting a ton, moving these to this phase and those to that phase and there are still so many to get to and so little time errmrgrrrd!!

Well I have news for you my friends: mycology is a never ending hobby. You may take breaks here and there, or you may even move on from the hobby entirely at some point. But as long as you stick with it, there will never be a time where you say to yourself, “It is finished”. You’ll never feel like you’ve done all there is to do, explored all there is to explore, worked with everything you’ve ever wanted to work with and completed your entire mycological journey. For as long as there is variance with mushrooms (as there are with people), and you still have that passion, there will always be something that pulls you in deeper and deeper and that really is the beauty of it. It really is never ending, and as soon as you realize that, you’ll see there is no reason to rush anything. There’s only so much time in your day/year/life that can be devoted to mycology…or any other hobby for that matter, and taking time to appreciate every step along the way and not rushing what you have is going to bring so much more joy into your life than doing the thing to get it done and move on.

I’ve recently related this to life in general as well. Not that life is never ending…we all die. And I’m excited to explore what there is after this life too! But wherever we are in life, we are right where we’re supposed to be. Don’t toss out any goals and aspirations you may have, but also don’t forget to just slow down and enjoy what you have along the way. Be absolutely present in every momnet, because that’s all we have right now….to be here now.

We might not even know exactly what the goal is or where we want to be, and that’s fine. A good friend of ours in the community, @Mycoangelo, sent me a book (The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse) the other day that really hit home. I’ve been opening it to random places and just reading a page or two that somehow were meant for that exact moment and plucking on those heart strings. One I read this morning that I’ve been digesting, said:

“Sometimes I feel lost” said the boy

“me too” said the mole “but we love you and love brings you home”

“I think everyone is just trying to get home”

I don’t know who else needed to hear that, but I sure did. The words on the page I randomly opened in the book mimicked the love and support I’ve been receiving from the community for years, but especially as of late. I know I haven’t been active in the main channels in Discord hardly at all recently, but I’ve been having some DEEP conversations in the DMs and emails, and they have been blasting my heart center right open and giving me support and encouragement to truck through whatever life throws my way and I cannot even begin to express how much you all mean to me.

I know a lot of us are going through some hardships in life right now, and I just want you to know, like in that book and in the words of Ram Dass, we are all just walking each other home. You have ALL the support through me and through the community, and if you’re ever in a tough spot in life that brings you down or makes you feel discouraged to continue, like the mycelium that we are, we will band together and send the resources, positivity and encouragement right back atcha any way we possibly can. You all have always been there for me and I will always be there for you. If you need something…even if it’s just someone to talk to or if you need a friend…please reach out and let someone know and help.

Hello everyone, I hope you are having just the most fantastic Wednesday possible! Another day full of endless possibilities, a day where we can learn new skills and make new friends. Who knows what’s to come, but it will be a great day for sure!

The universe sent me on a journey, and it just so happened to put me on a Discord server full of amazing people! The best people on the best server on all of Discord, I might say! I am so honored to have the opportunity to be here.

I have recently come back to cultivation after a long, almost two-decade break. I am a completely changed man with new perspectives on pretty much everything one could possibly have any sort of perspective on. With that said, there are a few core values that still hold true, and those are these: take care of as many people around you as you can, regardless of whether you stand to gain from it. Also, try to always learn as much as you possibly can, and the world will always take care of you.

Maybe the ways the world reciprocates that care may not always seem like the most fun, but the universe seems to always give us what we need exactly when we need it. Sometimes the lessons we learn are not easy, but often the most beneficial things are the most difficult.

Over the past several months that I have been a part of this wonderful community Milly has built for us, I have gained many things. I have gained friends, I have gained knowledge, but most importantly, I have gained an understanding of things that I have struggled with throughout my entire life, and because of that, I have so much gratitude for you all.

I have learned to slow down more often and really watch what is happening around me. I have learned to listen to my gut and trust the process.

I am an automotive painter by trade, a husband, and a father. Being able to take care of my family has given me purpose in life and allowed me to feel a kind of love that I didn’t know was even possible. The love I feel from my family is what drives me through life and allows me to get through the days that are not all that fun.

I feel like the majority of people have lost sight of how important family is to having a happy day-to-day life. We have gotten so wrapped up in all this consumerism and trying to “flex” on everyone on social media that it has almost contaminated our minds, dirtied up our souls, and made us completely disconnected from what is really important.

To me, cultivation is a sort of therapy. It gives me time to stop with all the ADHD and actually focus on something. I love watching the grain colonize and take over the substrate. It’s almost like you can see it reaching for that next bit of nutrition and meeting up with its friends.

Then it turns into a cake that produces a medicine that unlocks the mind and heals many people. Not only does it heal, but sometimes it’s fun as well. It’s okay to cut loose every once in a while, right? It doesn’t all have to be so serious now, does it?

As I reflect on all the things that have driven me through life, it has always come back to one particular thing: trying to figure out who I am.

For many, many years, I was lost, just sitting in a rut, atrophying away, wasting time playing games and working. A vicious cycle of a whole lot of nothing.

I am so grateful to have met the woman of my dreams and to have a family with her. She is the reason I have committed myself to mycology again, and it has become the second thing that has made me feel a real sense of purpose.

I am so grateful that she asked, “Grow me some mushrooms, please.” Little did she know the shitstorm she was about to set off, but I am glad she did because it has given me back a hobby I love.

The last little bit of words I have for you all is this: follow your heart no matter where it takes you.

I spent too many years listening to my brain, and it didn’t do me much good. Live a life filled with joy and happiness instead of the fear and dread the news promotes. Love everyone around you, and you will always feel that love come back.
