Welcome back, riders! How was your ride?

I tell you whhhhat, I don’t know how you feel about astrology thangs, and neither do I to be honest…I’m just uneducated beyond some basic surface level stuffs when it comes to the skylights. But this whole Mercury in Gatorade thing we just went through really sent a lot of us through some wild corkscrews, loopty loops, ups, downs, backwards and sideways all at the same time. I was discussing some of the things I’m feeling and dealing with a couple friends and noting the observation of many people in my orbit being challenged in similar ways. One of them (far more in tune than I) mentioned this Mercury swirl time that I’ve heard of for so long but never looked into. And I still haven’t (live is busy, ok!), but I would jokingly repeat it as to point the finger at the source of all of life’s woes. On Monday, I was just sitting in silence for a moment and felt like things were finally starting to mellow out a bit. Things felt a tad bit more calm, balanced and centered with myself and I sensed it from the squad for the most part too. “I wonder what Mercury is up to?” I asked myself, giving it a Goog. And whhhhhat do you know….Mercury found it’s way to swirl up some other planet that same day. I have a concept of a plan to look into this. I’m not saying this is the sole cause of all the swirliness lately, but if you’ve been swirled, it may be worth looking into.

In retrospectgrade, I realize that I was on a train for a while. I had a very pretty view, some hardly noticeable turns, calm chats with seat mates, a nice breeze. Very content, desires and attachments at a low or at least somewhat manageable level. To the onlooker going up the rollercoaster it could be perceived as “boring”, but it’s actually very nice. Then Mercury enters the chat raining all kinds of chaotic energy beams upon our unconsenting souls (or whatever it does) and that train car dumps you right onto the front seat of a rollercoaster you didn’t have a chance to preview. AHA!! Life strikes again! You forgot about life, didn’t you! All comfy cozy in your little train car…how cute. Welcome to the Megadeth Twist n’ Pull 9000 sponsored by Satan himself, sucka. Buckle up or don’t, we’re taking off in three…twNOW!

And before you know it, life is doing it’s life thing, throwing you test after lesson after joy after hardship and every morsel in between. And if you’re anything like me, more swirls and hills and twisty turnies mean more opportunities to do some rockin’ stuff and succeed like the badass you are! Don’t gloss over those accomplishments because you’re so used to your badassery. But it also allows AMPLE opportunity on that steep hill down to make some mistakes along the way. Don’t forget those either….process it in your own way and learn from it so you don’t shit yourself on the next hill (and maybe smile for the camera too). But don’t dwell on it either. You’re not going to be on the rollercoaster forever. The train is right around the corner and things will settle down just a bit You’ll have fewer opportunities for those huge wins and also fewer opportunities for those humongous L’s keeping you from seeing the track ahead. And the cycle repeats. It’s never constant and it’s never permanent.

Whether you’re currently on the most exhilarating, scariest, energizing and depleting ride of your life right now or enjoying a quiet ride through the park on a train, take it all in. Breathe it in and give thanks just for what it is. Don’t be too busy judging it…yourself and everything that’s happening. Just allow it. Be with it. Don’t get caught up in what you want or what you don’t want. Just take it all. Either way, life is really just a ride. We don’t need to take anything too seriously or feel like anything is stuck in it’s current form. We don’t need to do anything! There is no checklist…there is no “complete”. All we need to do is experience all that life has to offer with as much love and compassion as possible and life will be full.

I heard a quote from my great grandpappy mr. Ram Dass this past week that really resonated with me (it helps if you read it in his voice) :

“You only get to the point where you begin to watch from this place where you calm your mind down, this center you get into, what I call “the witness.” You develop a place from which you watch your entire drama go by. Including your own thoughts. It’s like you’re standing on a bridge watching your life go under the water.”

You’re just the witness. Just observing. You see some choppy waters on your right and remember the times when you felt like you were going to drown (but you didn’t). Some calm currents on the left remind you of a simpler time. There are trains running on each bank and a physics defying rollercoaster zooming above you that you think is awesome or terrifying or both. And there you are, separate from it all, just being. Taking it all in with no desire to go this way or that way. Eventually you’re going to get swooped up by something! And at that point, you’ll just float. Or scream. Or smile and say “CHOO-CHOO!” But no matter what, you’re right where you need to be and everything will be just fine.

Sometimes you and I…you and your partner or you and your buddy, might not be on the same ride. If you see someone about to lose their lunch on the swirlyhoop, be with them and help guide them to just be “the witness” to it all. Don’t try to “fix” anything, just be there. Hold their hand, give them a hug…just listen. And if you’re the one screaming your head off and taking a big ol dump on that hill, take some time for your own mental health. Put on your own mask before assisting others. Another Ram Dassism comes to mind that I’m butchering here, but he said something along the lines of “You can’t help someone who’s drowning in the river if you’re in the river too.” We’re learning how to stand nowhere to help people caught standing somewhere.

Last week 8/6 update: Also returning to the shop, the almighty, all-elusive, all-mysterious BLACK BOX!!! I freakin’ love making these for people, but got a little carried away earlier in the year and ran out of the little special goodies that made these boxes so fun, so I took them out of the shop for a while. This is a grab bag sort of item, where you just don’t know what you’re going to get! But if you add a note at checkout to let me know your skill level in the hobby (on a scale of 1-5), and any additional details about your fine self, I’ll do the rest! Details like “I’m starting to get into agar” or “gourmet only, please” help me tailor the box to your needs, otherwise I’ll take it into my own hands and let the universe pick out some goodies for ya!
