*Sometimes these posts are nice and flowy and put together rather well….this is not one of them. I purposely do not plan for these in advance and just spit out whatever is in my head from 3-5pm on Wednesdays…raw dog style. The thoughts are here but the flow is lacking today. Glad you’re here though! Welcome to my monkey brain*

I mentioned last week that there were threats of extreme hotness here in Austin (my baaad), but thankfully they were overinflated predictions. It’s cooled a bit with rain here and there, but I still think I have to call it…RIP Wine Cap garden. Time of death: Now, May 28. I’ve made a solid attempt to cultivate Wine Caps here for 3 or 4 years and make changes each time to give them the best chance of surthival. I try so hard to time our few weeks of cool but not too cool weather for when they’ll be popping off but I always get sideswiped by some extreme temp change. Who knows…maybe I have been successfully growing Wine Cap these few years but have ALSO been successfully feeding the deer when I’m not looking! They’ve chomped off the tops of my tomato plants before…I wouldn’t put it past them!

One theme that’s been present for me the past week or so has been just that…being present! I have a list of about 10 different processes that need to be completed on a somewhat regular basis- grains, agar, substrate, making syringes, etc. and every now and then, I get stuck in “living for tomorrow” mode. I’ll have some process or part of a process that really should get done that day, but I’ll think ahead just a little. “Well if I do this, I’ll be out of grains, so I should probably make more so I don’t run out”. And then I’ll make the grains, tomorrow will come, and I’ll be close to running out of something else. That cycle can (and does) repeat itself to infinity! And most likely, tomorrow will come and I won’t actually need the thing I prepared for! If I have time sensitive things that need to be done, and plan to have a big sale on agar this weekend (I am not. And I mean truly honestly not a “gotcha” moment, this is only an example), I’ll prep a ton in the days leading up to it and put my unfinished projects on the back burner. I wouldn’t be surprised if I only had orders for grains on agar day! Some time later, when I’m sitting on a ton of agar plates, I might think to myself, “well, I guess I better use these myself!” And as soon as I use the last friggin plate, I’ll get orders for nothing but agar! Not speaking from experience or anything…

I know this is all woo-woo, but it really does seem like the universe has some interesting ways of communicating with us. If what I mentioned above only happened once, it would be a wild coincidence, but time and time again…there might be something there! That’s not to say don’t plan for what lies ahead and live like tomorrow won’t happen, but at least for me, if my head is in the future while I have things in the now to attend to, it’s almost a guarantee that what I’m planning for won’t happen. Sometimes it seems like I hit a road block and am struggling to progress if I keep trying to clear those future blockages that don’t even exist yet.

I was talking with the great barefoot chainsaw man, @TarkilnForager about this the other day, and he said it’s as if the universe is looking at me saying, “look at all these things he has/is making! He’s not even using what he has!” and when I am finished using what I have, the universe sees that I am ready for another task or request! I love this thought and feel it may be one of the laws of my personal universe.

I’ve been reflecting on this, and think this is also a reason why we go through times of struggle or are faced with challenges. For instance, about a year ago, I remember talking to a friend about how good I’ve been doing dealing with my sugar cravings. My whole relationship with sugar has changed! I don’t even want the sweets anymore! I’m cured! I can walk right by a bakery and not think twice about giving into temptation! I’m so strong! And all the whole, the universe is hearing me pat myself on the back about getting rid of an impulse, flaunting that I am no longer challenged. I’m above it! Only minutes later, a fresh batch of cookies shows up at my doorstep. No challenge you say? Here’s one! I ate a cookie or 5 and later realized that was the first domino of many to pull me ever so slightly off track each time.

Whether we speak to a friend and pat ourselves on the back, or just think the same intention, acknowledging your proficiency in something will often be heard by the universe and responded to. You could say this response was sent to humble you or “put you in your place” or that you’re being smited for speaking out on it, but it’s really just the universe hearing your declaration of awesomeness and saying “he’s ready for the next level!”. That could be you feeling like you’re in a groove with a routine, have extreme willpower or incredible motivation…whatever that is for you. And so you are presented with ways of leveling up! Sometimes it’s a nice gentle step up that you barely notice, and other times it’s a giant boulder to jump over. You stub your toe and sprain your ancle along the way, but hey, you made it. Sometimes that’s the way we need to learn. I know I’m so stubborn, a lot of the times I don’t actually understand the lesson until I fall flat on my face. But the universe is not going to give us any challenges or times of struggle that we can’t handle! The hardest times give the best XP for faster leveling.

I feel like this ties into the “living for tomorrow” theme, because when we celebrate those moments like we won….like depression is permanently behind you or some addiction is forever in the past or whatever it is you struggle with, it creates opportunities for our future selves to be tested. And sometimes that’s what we need! But if we focus on the good that is now, being present in the moment, doing what you know is right for you, right now, we are helping overcome the issues that need the most attention, and are often rewarded for doing so.

Doing the thing, whatever it is, without any expectation of a reward or any particular outcome, is where we make the most of our work. Do it because you know it is right for you, whether it is solving some problem or not. I know I got into meditation and a lot of my centering/balancing routine when I was in a bit of a depression. Those things helped immensely and are still things I keep in my routine today. But every once in a while, I’ll let something fall off my routine and won’t even notice until something needs attention! I’ll say “oh yeah, last time I had digestion issues, I did yoga” or “my energy has been low lately…I should start doing morning walks again”. Well…why the hell did you stop doing the things you knew were good for you? Because there was no problem to fix? You found the formula that worked! Keep the friggin formula! Easier said than done. Be kind to yourself, give yourself grace and stay on the path you know is right for your soul my friends. I love you!! <3
