Another week down in the history books, though not at all what I expected. I went back to the homeland (Ohio) this past weekend for a short trip to see some friends and visit family. There’s usually added stress and a slew of other undesirables on the actual holidays themselves (Thanksgiving/Christmas), so this year I attempted an in between visit. The mush babies gave me permission and encouraged me to have a few days away, ensuring they would be safe and sound while I visit my human people. The timing seemed like everything lined up perfectly.

Unfortunately, almost all of my family ended up getting sick, each in their own special way. I didn’t get to see my parents at all, only very briefly crossed paths with my extended family in from out of town as well, and a few friends that I really wanted to see ended up having plans as well. This is not to say the trip was a total downer….I still had a great visit with my grandpa, perhaps the only healthy one left in the fam this weekend, and spent some excellent quality time with other friends I hadn’t seen in years. Overall, it was a very nice time….just not as I expected it to be.

Sometimes I reflect on a certain day or event and think, “maaaan that was PERFECT timing!” The series of events couldn’t have lined up any better….as soon as I got home, the friend I was meeting came over, we hit such and such event and right at the perfect time, we saw so and so….I’m making all of this up, but you have those days where everything seems to fit like a puzzle. Then you have those times where you fly to another state and everyone you planned on visiting gets sick or something your of your control happens. In those moments it may be tough to realize, but I really do think things ALWAYS happen at the PERFECT time. We just may not know it yet. Or ever! We may think the timing was “good” when things go according to our plans, or that timing was “bad” when we plan things that don’t happen for one reason or another, but the things that took place instead of your scheduled plans happened for a specific reason, whether we like it or not. I may not realize it now, but I bet some of the conversations that I had with friends I came across when I planned to be with my parents were influential in some way. I said something that will have an impact on them, or they said something to me that will reverberate down the line and make a positive change in some way. Or this “missed” trip will cause me to visit them again at a time I normally wouldn’t have and something will happen there. Or a multitude of other possibilities unknown to me today…but I am pretty confident it all worked out just as it should have. I also understand that this is a very woo-woo way of thinking, but by now you should be used to it and I do color code these words so you can skip all the ramblings in black.

I actually had this theme of “timing” going through my head a couple weeks ago. Sometimes I’ll do all the prep for a certain complicated myco process, and when it comes time to actually do said process, I feel something is just…off? I’m incredibly motivated to do it. Very excited. But some force is keeping me from getting into it at that specific time. I’m not procrastinating, there’s nothing else pulling me away or making me feel like I want to do something else instead…it just doesn’t feel right. And I’ll come back to it in a few hours or the next day, or even a few days later, and feel the time is right. No idea why. But I do like to come up with scenarios in my head about a rogue gust of wind that would’ve come at the “wrong” time and ruined the project or that all the mycelium I’m working with is secretly saying “HOOOLLLLD!! HOLLLLDDDD!!!! READY?? GOOO!!!!” and I’m just feeling that energy a certain way.

I had one of these thoughts running through my head during grain day (one of my very favorite days), as I was quickly trying to weigh out bags to put in the autoclave. I wondered to myself if sometimes the things that pull me away from a process or obligation, the things that make me aggravated sometimes because it ruins that “perfect timing” is all meant to be. Like maybe if I did complete everything as expected and shipped out that last order just in the nick of time, it may have reached the recipient at just the WRONG time…perhaps before they were ready or right before they learned something that would be of value during their experience…something like that. (you know…more woo-woo). And just as I’m grasping that thought, thinking I actually am finishing my grain process at the perfect time, my scoop hits the table ever so slightly and 1,000 grains go flying every which way creating a huge mess on my freshly vacuumed floor. That aggravation turned into laughter in that moment, like the universe was communicating directly to me to say “yes, sometimes things don’t work out as you expect and it’s all for good reason”. So when I make a mess or can’t see my family for whatever reason, I like to think it’s meant to be that way, and I’m thankful things are the way they are <3

All that being said, timing is still “less than ideal” in my monkey brain’s view of perfection over here. Ah so. Everything is perfect as is. But I did have one hell of a time with allergies I didn’t even know existed on my Ohio trip, and came back more fatigued than I ever thought possible yesterday. Most orders have been shipped, though a couple of supply orders that were recently placed will not be shipping until tomorrow. USPS seems to have caught up with shipping delays we were seeing the past month or so, which is awesome because we expect things to go right back into delay mode here in a week or two from all the Christmas shenanigans. This happens every year…it’s to be expected…please be patient with them. But for now, things are running smoothly. Except for Canada. USPS has suspended acceptance of mail to Canada as Canada Post employees are on strike sooooo no Canadian orders for now, but hopefully that will resolve soon.
