Fancy seeing you here! You’re exactly where you need to be, perfect just the way you are, and I’m glad you’re here sharing this space with us. I know I talk about the Discord squad all the time, but I just can’t help but shout out how thankful I am for this community. Y’all really look out for each other! And me!! I was overwhelmed with joy just a few days ago when 3 different people anonymously chipped in to buy some supplies for a new member of the crew, and a couple others were kind and generous enough to send me some goodies to include with orders. You guys rock!!

The theme of my life this past week has been “perspective”. I don’t choose the theme…the theme chooses me! Err…something like that. I’ve just noticed how different things can be simply by changing your perspective on it, and when I really paid attention to other’s perspectives, I noticed most of the time, they mirrored my own. Whenever you have the ability to just go with the flow and release any expectation of the situation you’re in, not much can go wrong! Or at least you can be thankful for whatever happens instead of being disappointed or angry. Things just flow better.

I had a couple friends in from Ohio this past weekend, and we had a grand ol’ time, but there were a few things that took a left turn as well. We’d make a wrong turn or three (I say WE but, ya know…me) and just laugh about it, enjoy the scenery and opportunity to explore a new area, and roll with it. We missed an event we had planned, and didn’t get upset…just found something else to do, like it was never even on the schedule. Part of this is because no matter what we did together, we were happy to just hang out no matter what the occasion.

It’s easier for me to keep up the positive attitude and perspective when I have friends along for the ride too. And right about when I was thinking that very thought, one of my other friends shared his perspective on traffic, where I or you or he is usually alone…much easier to lose your cool! My perspective on traffic has always been that I’m just sitting there, usually listening to some amazing music, and when I get home I’ll probably….still be listening to some amazing music. So no biggie…no rush. This friend was telling me about how he loves to look around at all the cars and all these people and just be amazed at how every single person is incredibly unique, doing their totally separate thing with equally as complex lives as your own. Just appreciating the beauty and one-of-a-kindness of it all. So whether you’re zooming along with ease or stuck in rush hour traffic, it’s all amazing. What a nice perspective!

This was the same friend that called out my own perspective on things a couple months ago….not sure if I shared the story or not. He was in my living room and I was in the kitchen scrubbin’ tubs. After a little while, I think he just looked over in my direction and I said something like, “gaaah….friggin tubs” in a defeated tone. And AS SOON as I said that, I thought to myself, “You know what? I don’t even dislike the tub scrubbin. It’s all part of this greater whole and every step in this process is equally as necessary as the previous and the next. Why did I even say that!?” Within about one second of thinking this to myself, he said, “You don’t hate it. Don’t lie to yourself…you know you love every part of this whole thing” as I stood there shaking my head in near disbelief that he just told me my own thoughts but also…of course. It’s meditative, calming, soothing, and really just isn’t that bad. But if I really did have the perspective I was bluffing, it probably wouldn’t be too enjoyable.

One last thought on perspective! I think I heard this from Ram Dass a while back, but don’t know what the name of the lecture or story was. A man was talking to him about fasting. He wanted to fast for a week, but Ram Dass encouraged him to go for 9 days. The man came back after a week and said “I’ve gone 7 whole days now without food!” to which Ram replied, “Good for you! Only 2 more days and you’ll be enlightened!”. He then went outside and say a homeless man who said “Sir, could you spare a quarter? I haven’t eaten in 7 days”. You wouldn’t tell that man “Good for you! Only 2 more days and you’ll be enlightened!”. In some situations you give encouragement, in others you give the quarter. (Or $15 when you account for inflation). It’s allll about perspective.
