Happy Fall my funky friends!! “False Fall” is still in full effect here…can we keep it up? The forecast is still looking pretty mild and I’ll take it! I say this every year, but damnit I’m going to continue *trying* to make an outdoor mush bed just as soon as temps drop enough and pray they don’t get sizzled or frozen. This was accomplished almost accidentally when I lived in Ohio….not such an easy feat here in hell Texas, yet I continue on.

Speaking of funky friends…one of my funkiest friends sent me a pic of perhaps the squiggliest gills I ever laid eyes on the other day! Just look at those ramen noodle gills! I’d bury my face in those gills.

I want to share a story with you about perspective. At one point, maybe a year ago, I was mentally struggling with this and that….I honestly don’t remember the details, but I know I still had my friends and my family and this awesome community and was absolutely provided for by the universe. In all ways, I was taken care of, but some depression and anxiety and other undesired emotions were beginning to take hold. For me, when times are amazing, it’s pretty easy to commune with the mushroom and accept it’s guidance, follow through with “homework” I’m given, and bliss out. But when times are “tough”…whatever that may mean, I’m far less confident and excited to receive those teachings.

I knew I could use some assistance from the medicine, but kept putting it off and making excuses. Part of the problem when my mental gets this way is not just feeling apprehensive about the experience, but feeling like I don’t even want to get out of the situation! Situation bad = big sulk. But the situation was not “bad”, and sulking does nothing to help get out of that mental state. I finally took the leap and started my ritual.

In the middle of this experience, I remember lying down on the couch eyes closed with some nice vibey music and just drifting away. My mind was on another plane, thoughts came and went, and I was right where I needed to be, lightly working through some of my issues and feeling resistance toward tackling others. I opened my eyes and turned my head to look out the window (at night) to see a human face staring right back at me. Even though I wasn’t at an angle where it could’ve been a reflection of me, I moved slightly to see if my possibly perceived reflection would move with me aaaand it didn’t. I never broke eye contact, and noticed fear starting to sink in. I stared for 10-15 seconds, and was rational enough to think, “there’s no way someone is actually outside my window looking in right now” I had no freakin’ clue what else it could be, as I saw facial features and all, but I knew how absurd it would be for someone to just stare at me in such a fragile, vulnerable state. Who would do such a thing! But no matter how I tried to spin it to my psyche, I began to believe I was in a staring contest with this monster. A few more seconds passed, and I noticed it was starting to storm. I definitely heard thunder and saw rain drops and wait…I think I just saw a bolt of lightening off in the distance too! So crazy that I started this experience in super calm weather not too long ago, but now that I have the fear, it’s storming outside!

I remembered a quote from Michael Pollan in his book, “How to Change Your Mind”, where he says something along the lines of, “If you see a door, open it! If you see a flight of stairs, go up! And if you see a monster, don’t try to run from it. Go right up to it, plant your feet, and say ‘what do you have to teach me?'” I’ve had this quote in my mind for years, and often relay that same message when talking about an experience going south but never imagined I would have to use it for myself! Up to this point, I’d never had anything scary or the least bit frightening come up on psilocybin. So I took his advice more or less. I didn’t just charge at this face, but I calmly stood up and walked to the door, keeping the face in my vision. If anything, I at least wanted to see this thing scurry off when I opened the door.

I opened the door and looked toward the window, but nothing was there. I walked out to inspect whatever I could’ve seen that would look like a face and couldn’t find any resemblance or anything out of place at all. And the ground was dry! No rain, no thunder or lightening….a supremely calm evening. It was all in my head. That fright, followed by sudden relief, gave me the mental reset I needed. For the rest of the experience, I was shown it’s all about perspective. The issues I had weren’t really issues at all, I was just perceiving them to be greater than they were. When I resisted working through my problems, it was giving them power, exacerbating and amplifying them. As soon as I faced my fears in that experience, everything vanished. Not just the scary face and the stormy weather, but a lot of the things I was down about completely vanished as well. And as soon as I faced my problems in the real world head-on, with confidence from that experience, it was never as bad as I had imagined.

I often think back to this experience when I’m mentally battling something that I know doesn’t deserve that much time and energy from me. Just a simple change of perspective or refreshed outlook on a situation can turn “WHAT DO I DO OH LAWD HOW WILL I EVER RECOVER” into a calm, cool and collect “ah…so” and I know I can help myself and others much more effectively with the “ah, so” mindset.

It’s not always easy to remember when you’re in the thick of it, but things are usually not nearly as bad as our minds can make them out to be. It’s allllll about perspective. And if you’re in one of those shaky states of mind, don’t go full on resist mode. Don’t be afraid to ask for help…from the mushroom, from me, or from this amazing community of people who have no doubt all been in a similar situation before where everything around them was crashing down. They made it, and so will you. We’re all in this together. We’re all just walking each other home <3

Blessed be the spore gods this week! I kept running into issues with the PE6 genetics I had a while back, so I took it down until I was able to make some improvements and boyyyyy howdy Penis Envy #6 is back in full force! For those of you who aren’t familiar with this one, it’s a cross of Penis Envy and Texas cubensis that was circulated by RogerRabbit back in the day. The aesthetic traits of these fruits have taken on the characteristics of the Texas cube, while retaining much of the potency original PE is known for. They are absolutely stunning, but will not look like the typical PE types you may be looking for. Resiliant, easy to work with a suitable for all experience levels in the hobby.

Also back on track….return of the BLACK BOX! As warned in previous resurrections, the Black Box is something that comes and goes these days. I like to put little trinkets and special things not found in the shop with these mystery boxes, so when I run out of goodies to add, it’ll take another break for a while. Big shout out to @Myconomist on Discord for sending a killer care pack of things guaranteed to make you smile!! I’m refraining from posting a thank you in the #shout-outs channel for now until peeps have a chance to be surprised by his generosity and humor.
