Heyo squirrely Q’s!

I don’t think he saw me stuffing his cheeks with my discarded grains! Total stealth mode! Just like the partial eclipse last week…tooootal stealth mode over here in Austin. I swear every time we have some cool astronomical astrological event here (meteor shower, crazy full moons, eclipses, etc), we have total cloud cover! Then clear skies right up until the next one. The universe is definitely trolling us. Shout out to @MysDee for sharing a sweet shot their son took and posting it on Discord. Let me live vicariously through your clear skies and share some pics if you have em!

And yes, I know, I know…we’re all melting out there. Eggs over easy on the sidewalk type stuff….we COOKIN! But just as a gentle reminder, for as long as you can take it, going for a walk, even in this heat, is still quite nice. Chaos abounds, existing is exhausting, work can take a toll and many of us are constantly struggling with anxiety and depression. But a breath of fresh air, checking out some local wildlife, flora and fauna and just getting that blood circulating on a nice stroll outdoors can do WONDERS for subsiding all of these woes. Throw on some tunes or just take in the sounds of nature and take a step away from the hustle and bustle of life once in a while.

I’m just as guilty as anyone else when it comes to getting in a nice groove of work related activities. Thankfully, I absolutely love what I do, so sometimes it’s tough to break that stride and relax for a bit. But I’d be hard pressed to tell you of a time where I went on a walk and didn’t have some amazing epiphany or solve some of the world’s (my world anyway) problems. I wouldn’t dare crack a window with these temps lingering, so I imagine I’m just stewing in my own hot breath at home, with a pinch of incense and palo santo. As soon as I get outdoors, I feel my head is cleared and I’m grooving in a whole new way. Until my shoes melt to the pavement of course…then it’s time to go home. Plus you might get to see some funkadelic flag, like this Snoopa Lisa! I do my best to keep Austin weird…this person is also helping.

My main message I wanted to communicate today centered around experimentation and trying new things in the world of mycology. As I said above, sometimes I can get so used to doing things a certain way that I get in a groooove. It’s a good groove! But can be a hindrance on learning new ways of doing things by not thinking outside the box so much. I learn a lot from this community, especially the newer guys and gals that try some pretty odd things, only to find out it’s a ground breaking amazing tek I just never thought of! So go off! Try all the methods you haven’t heard of before and share your findings! This is how we all learn and improve.

Interestingly enough, the wonderful @Psilly_Goose shared a similar message today regarding experimentation, sprinkled with personal stories and encouragement and my man…I couldn’t say it better myself. Quite the wordsmith! So without further ado, I’ll let the Goose himself share a bit about his life and let that last paragraph really hit home for y’all today. Dia daoibhe mo chairde!

Psilly Goose here filling in at the eleventh hour trying to come up with some profound wisdom – of which I currently find myself in short supply. But I shall endeavor to fill the blank space with a little of what brought me here and musings on this wild and wonderful life we’re in.

As a kid with pretty hard ADD and major difficulty in school I was introduced to Art at a young age as a means of focusing my mind and a catharsis from the ongoing frustrations of rote learning and expectation. This eventually led me to Art college where I really came into my own, due in no small part to the mushrooms that helped me get there and paid for my education. As the 5th child in a family of 6 theres no way my parent were paying for “Art” college so I hustled and worked 2 jobs to pay my way. But on the weekends in September and March I would go to some spots id found and pick fields dry of liberty caps, bring them home and furtively dry them in the oven overnight to share at college the next day.

Mushrooms became a big part of my life and although I fell out of that when I started traveling after college I came back around to it almost a year ago after reading stacks of reports and studies on the healing and neurological benefits of this wonderful organism. 

My plan was to grow enough to be able to macro dose my father in law every 28 days and supplement with functional species in an effort to alleviate and hopefully eradicate some of his maladies post stroke from 10 years ago. So that set me right back into the mushrooms only this time home cultivation was the order of the day and I jumped in with both feet!

This mycosphere i feel had a come up in levels that im sure most of us moved through but the discord and this server in particular feels like a home for me, as a typical autodidactic self reliant person I was surprised by how easily feeling a part of the community became for me and the wealth of knowledge and experience abound is a constant tap from which I feed. I dont have a tight circle of friends and I dont golf on the weekend or do poler nights, my family is my life and my focus but being a part of this has given me more and stabilized my mental health better than years of prescribed and otherwise denied pharmaceutical intervention. 

Ive gotten more positive outcomes from mushrooms that anything else in my life apart from my wife and 2 beautiful children. 

A single 8g dose of b+ gave me the clarity and perspective to extricate myself from some really toxic and dangerous lifestyle and I will forever be in debt to the power of this medicine for that. 

I feel like the community thrives not just on the growers but the commonality of what brought us to where we are, we want to heal, we want to help and we want to grow and that median ties us all together with a tighter bond than throwing arbitrary hearts at a doctored snapshot of some asshole you knew for 6 months on holiday in France. Mass media is a poison that pulls our senses and systematically removes us from the social interaction it purports to engage. Division and polarization are the order of the day as clicks and reactions drive revenues at the expense of our mental health and rising social and existential anxiety.

Our community is an oasis in the desert right now and long may that be the case. 

When it comes to growing and what we do I’m still in a position of constant awe and an eternal student. This game is so young and there’s so much we don’t know and the only thing in the mycosphere that gives me pause are the died in the wool guys (of which there thankfully are not many) who espouse the notion that there are singular ways and means to do this work, that their way is the right way and nothing else matters. I find this to be archaic and counterproductive, it is anathema to the process and net result of what we are doing. I get that some of us need a little more help and some learn better from following explicit instruction but to say there’s only one way to skin this cat is entirely moot. 

I want everyone to FAFO as a general rule because there’s so much about mushrooms we just still don’t understand let alone just flat out don’t know. The new wave of cultivation is upon us and we are all a part of the psychedelic renaissance! Let’s experiment, let’s play and let’s not be stymied but the restrictions of past action. 

I love you all, you keep my wheels turning and my brain engaged. I like to say I’ve never seen a place with such and dearth of arseholes and that’s true. You are the makers and molders of tomorrow’s world, artisans of a reemerging craft and modern shaman, spread your blessings, spread your knowledge and be the curanderos to your families, friends and neighbors.

Some sweet new stuff is dropping in the shop this month! I’m starting to release a handful of new goods on the first Wednesday of each month to make it really special! There may be a new release on occasion throughout the month, but most new drops will happen on the first WW:

3lb Casing Mix! By popular demand, casing mix is now in ze shop! This is a standard “Jiffy Mix” blend, used for most exotic varieties and Penis Envy (and other funky funkertons) varieties to create a perfect microclimate on your substrate cake. This aint your momma’s corn muffin mix! This is a blend of peat moss, vermiculite and hydrated lime to raise the pH level. Adding about 1/2″ of a casing layer will help fend off contamination, retain humidity on the surface of your substrate, and keep a good balance of CO2 and oxygen that those tricky varieties crave. It can be used on regular cubes as well, but is not necessary.

Tak Mountain is a super nice landrace hailing from HIGH elevation in the mountains of Thailand, brought into circulation by the great John Allen in his travels! I had this specimen years ago and recently re-acquired from a close myco buddy. Reunited and it feels so goooood! Reunited ’cause we understooood!

Jack Frost syringes are now available in ze shop! I’ve worked with this one for years and it never disappoints! It’s a true albino cross of True Albino Teacher (TAT) and Albino Penis Envy (APE) from Dave Wombat. What a dude. A true classic.

Stakz is one I’ve held onto for a while and worked with over the past few years and is now being released into the wild! This originated from Dirty South Mycology as a cross of Stormtrooper and Albino Koh Samui Super Strain (KSSS) and came to me from my good friend over at MushLove in Colorado. I’ve held this one in my back pocket to give out with the “unlisted”/off-menu surprise gives, but it’s just too good not to offer to the community

I’ve switched up my blank agar plate supplier, and all plates now ship with cold packs to ensure they don’t get cooked and contaminated in transit! I haven’t worked with this brand for very long, but by recommendation from @Ed and a couple others in the community, the quality holds up and work amazingly. Now available in the 60mm size as well (vs standard 90mm)! These little guys are PERFECT for testing spores and LC for viability and contamination before you go inoculating grains with something you’re unsure about, and are still an excellent size to use the entire plate for inoculating grains with agar. Check the size comparison of 60mm vs 90mm below, and as always, if any plates come cracked, contaminated or fudged up in any way, I’ll make it right with ya!

Huge shout out to mr. @Psilly_Goose and @Sporecore for coming up with a fun game of “Pay-it-Forward” tag! The past couple weeks, @Psilly_Goose and @Sporecore have been tagging each other with a pre-paid rolls in the mycosino (what kind, generous lads!) Just a reminder with the injection ports on grain bags (the little black rubber-like disk)…wipe those puppies down with 70% iso before you inject anything! Even though they should be pretty secure in the box they’re shipped in, air EVERYWHERE is filthy and it can pick up some unwanted mold spores. You don’t want to be pushing those right into your perfectly sterilized grains! I personally do not use injection ports…I just wipe the bag with iso and jab right through the plastic. Either way, take every precaution to set yourself up for success!
