Hiya, fantastical fungi friends!

Wheweeee it’s a hot one out there! I feel like the entire earth has a fever right now! Stay hydrated and do your best to keep cool and keep your cool out there! I’ve seen a number of situations out in the wild recently that have led me to believe the temperature may have an effect on our temper, patience and overall health and wellness…big surprise!

I live in a larger city (Austin), so road rage is expected. It seems a bit of road rage is actually required to live here. But I will say…I’ve heard more and more horns recently, witnessed some heated exchanges and seen situations play out in ways that made me want to look away but I just couldn’t.

In one situation just today, I saw your typical impatient tailgating between two pairs of cars. The lead car in one of the pairs sped up to appease the impatient driver following behind. They passed me at a pretty decent rate, so I didn’t see how it ended, but it looked like they were starting their own game of Mario Kart zipping down the road. With the other pair, the lead car slowed down even more, clearly frustrated by the car behind, throwing his hands in the air and shouting at the car behind him.

I’m not saying those situations wouldn’t have happened in cool 60-70 degree temps, but I do think tempers flare when it’s unbearably hot. Those impatient/angry/frustrated people will always be around. And in either of those situations, when someone is 2 inches from your bumper and demanding you take action one way or another, you sort of lose either way! Whether you speed up or slow down, that person/thing/emotion took hold of you and changed your ways. Maybe your blood pressure went up or you said “I’ll show them” as you slow down…they got you either way.

In a completely unrelated situation, I was able to witness a heart warming interaction at the grocery store. A woman had unknowingly dropped something from her purse as someone was coming down the aisle. The second woman picked up whatever it was, and said “excuse me” to the first woman, which was met by a snappy “WHAT!”, only to find that she was trying to help and not bother. From my perspective, all of the muscles in her face rearranged and softened. She instantly went from angry and defensive to a face that communicated “oh sweetie, you’re helping me?” and in that brief moment where I caught a glimpse, it seemed like the defensive woman really just needed someone on her side for once. Like that seemingly insignificant interaction just changed her whole day.

Sometimes we are that angry/impatient/frustrated person! We all need grace and everyone you see out and about have some crazy backstory of how they became the person they are. We all have stressors in life, different aggravations and buttons being pushed. Some are having a wonderful day, while others are in the depths of a terrible depression. We’re slammed with news from every corner of the world about what’s going wrong, seeing the evolution of a freakish dystopia that no one asked for and on top of that, it’s friggin’ hot out there. GIVE GRACE.

I can think back to MANY occasions where I was that person who was almost looking for confrontation in a weird way. A conversation would be leaning toward a certain topic that I knew we didn’t agree on, and my mind would be going toward some kind of “well you didn’t think about THIS now did ya!” or “gotcha” moment. When I think back on those times, the ones that stand out the most are when the person on the other end didn’t take the bait. They didn’t indulge my confrontational pokes! In the moment I may have felt a little confused as to why my sick game of 5D chess didn’t work out. I thought I was going to be able to say the thing! Whatever thing that was, it didn’t need to be said. And in reflection of those moments, I’m so grateful that the person on the other end was more mature than me in that situation.

If you MUST react to someone pushing your buttons, see if you can change their vibe by reacting in a way that calms whatever confrontation they are demanding from you. Or just don’t react at all…that’s fine too. You have the power to escalate a temper or temper the temper. Even if it’s only with your gaze, try to smile with your eyes if someone is acting out. You never know how that butterfly effect will change their day, life or change the whole world. I love yous!

P.S. I’ve noticed a trend among several different friend circles in recent days. Otherwise healthy, energetic and limber folks mentioning being more sore than usual without a known reason. Also, not really feeling exhausted per se, but definitely sleeping more or having unusual sleeping habits lately. And while sleeping, they have reported having a MUCH deeper sleep, recalling dreams easier and having more vivid and lucid dreams. Is it the weather? Is it CERN shutting down for a while? Did they revive Harambe? If you have any input, please put it in.

Good evening, my MW family!!!

Most of you know me as Devils. I first found Milly about five years ago when I was getting back into this hobby. Life eventually pulled me away from growing again, but about a year and a half ago, I returned.

What I found when I came back was much more than the best place to purchase mushroom supplies.

I found a community.

At that time, I was struggling heavily with bipolar disorder. My creativity and motivation had come to a standstill, my mind was unstable, and I was trying to find somewhere to reset/find myself again. Just felt like I forgot how to be me. There were periods when life felt like it had reached a point of no return.

During one of the darkest moments of my life, I reached out to the community, and Milly and a few others reached back. A connection…

They listened, checked on me, stayed present, and reminded me that I mattered without judging me. When your mind has you convinced that you are completely alone, simply having another person acknowledge you can mean more than they will ever know.

I will never forget that.

Something else this community has taught me is that sometimes it is not a gesture itself that stays with you. It is simply knowing that someone thought of you.

Being kept in another person’s thoughts means more to me than I can explain. It reminds you that you matter, that you are seen, and that you are not moving through life alone.

That is what makes this place different.

People here do not only care whether your jars colonize, your agar stays clean, or your tubs fruit. They care whether YOU make it and whether you are okay, too.

There is a connection here that is difficult to explain unless you have felt it. We come from different places, backgrounds, and beliefs, yet somehow, we meet here through fungi. The folks here genuinely want those around them to succeed—not only in growing mushrooms, but in life as well.

Mushrooms have become more than a hobby for me. They are a catalyst for creativity, a connection to nature, and proof that failure can still feed new life.

A contaminated grow can sometimes teach you more than a successful one. Dead material can become food for something living. What looks like an ending can become the foundation for another beginning.

Mycelium reminds me that life does not move in a straight line. It breaks down, reconnects, adapts, and begins again.

When my mind becomes too loud and life just gets hectic, this hobby gives it somewhere to go. When life feels disconnected, mycelium reminds me that connection can still exist beneath the surface, even when we cannot see it.

This community has helped me rediscover that connection.

You guys have encouraged my experiments, answered my questions, laughed with me, tolerated my strange ideas, and helped me keep moving when my grows—and sometimes my life—did not go according to plan.

If you are new here, quietly watching from the background, or afraid to ask what you think is a stupid question, speak up. Ask it. Nobody began this hobby knowing everything.

If you just lost a grow, clean up, learn what you can, and try again.

If your mind is taking you somewhere dark, especially if you are struggling with mental illness, please know that you are not alone. Even when your mind tells you otherwise, there are people who care whether you make it through.

Thank you, Milly, for creating more than a shop. Thank you for creating a network.

And thank you to everyone here who shares knowledge freely, celebrates the success of others, keeps people in their thoughts, and reminds them that they still belong.

UPDATES:

Please put your caps and stems together and give a warm welcome to our newest member of the shop, Makilla Gorilla! We went in reverse order with this one, as it is a parent to Gorilla Wizard released a couple weeks ago. Makilla Gorilla is a stunning cross of Melmak Revert and APE, having light, caramel cream bell caps that are absolutely mesmerizing. This one is in swab packs only!

CVG and all coir related items are back in full force! Multiple shipments of coir landed this week, along with some coco MULCH that I’m experimenting with for the first time! @UnderdogArtisan has been playing around with CVG with a dash of azomite for a nutrient boost and added perlite for extra aeration (with excellent results), and I’m thinking the mulch would have a similar effect with extra aeration. If you want to experiment along with us with the mulch or CVG+PA, just holler and I’ll hook it up!

We added a new channel on Discord under the “Entertainment Discussion” section, titled “The Mycelial Veil” where you can view, read, play along, and add to @Devilsinmydetails magical fantasy land that is THE MYCELIAL VEIL! Man has spent a lot of time putting this together and it really shows! It was meant to be a continuing collaboration of sorts where other creatives can add to the lore and get lost in this wonderland.
