Hellooo my dear spore elders!

My dearest friends in the whole wide world, I hope you’re happy and healthy on this b-e-a-utiful September Wednesday! We have this thing in Austin we vall “false Fall” that I believe we’re in the middle of right now. I woke up the other day and it was 66 degrees…how lovely! Mid-day I was reminded this is indeed false Fall as I’m sweating bullets in 101 degree heat. Actual Fall will arrive….I have faith.

Last week, I was riding front seat on the struggle bus with blood sugars in and out of whack and couldn’t hardly think to save my life. I really appreciate the peeps that hit me up sending healthy vibes and concerns! I assure you things are *generally* under control over here. Until I actually need to get a post written or a video uploaded…then the beetus says ATTACK!!!

The video I posted about all things liquid culture was essentially a product of frustration as I went up and down on the blood sugar rollercoaster. I was already a bit flustered that I shot the video with some very quiet music playing in the other room, causing YouTubes minions to flag it as a copyright strike. I already have one for the same infringement, and have seen several mushroom related channels get taken down without warning recently, so I decided to shoot it again in a hurry, which didn’t live up to my expectations. During this re-shoot, I realized I may not know exactly how I wanted to go about it. I don’t mind at all re-doing the thing in a more concise way if it would be helpful.

If you’ve seen the first video I posted a couple years ago, A Day in the Life, I show my process on making spore syringes in a very quick stitch style. I made my first version of the LC video the same way and sent it to a friend before uploading it. He said it was cool, but would like to have a more thorough explanation of things, the “why” behind specific steps, etc. (I’m the same way). So on the second round, I turned that 2 minute video into an overexplained, poorly edited 12 minute video. By now, I’m sure you know I am LONG winded! I feel like most people like a more clear, concise and to the point tutorial, but I’m really not sure. So here I am, asking you, the people! The mighty magical mycologists- what do you want to see? I know there are hundreds of videos out there showing essentially the same thing I’m doing, but seeing someone else’s spin on it is cool. I plan on making an instructional type video once a month, posted on the first WW of the month, and so far “Spawning Gourmets” is in the lead on the poll for the next one (go to the #polls channel in Discord to vote if you haven’t already!)

So here’s what I propose…send me a message on Discord, shout it from the rooftops in the general chat, or shoot me an email if you have an opinion on this. I can either make short and sweet quick stitch style videos, I could make them more in between the super short and super long (maybe 5-6 minutes), oooorrrrr we could have a monthly pow-wow type community engaging event once a month where I pop on a live stream type deal for maybe an hour, field questions from the squad about the topic of that month, and show how I do the thang. It wouldn’t be posted as a video, so if you’re there, you’re there, but would allow for a more interactive way to get the answers you’re looking for. Discord allows for a host to show a live video feed while others can chime in via chat or voice to ask questions and shoot the shit and everything would be in real-time. Just a thought! Let me know what you think would be best.

I’ve noticed quite a few people recently describe their involvement in this hobby, saying they get into it all hot and heavy for a while, then fall off and take a break to focus on other projects, family, health, etc. and come back to it a couple years later. As with most mycologists, I think we’re generally very passionate people and tend to go all-in with things like this. Being in the position of spore wizard extraordinaire, I see this cycle repeat itself on the regular. So often, this hobby calls us out of nowhere and pulls us in DEEP, right at the time we need it most. We receive what is needed, move on, either intentionally or unintentionally, and circle back around when we are needed again (or perhaps when WE need IT). I hear so many people say, “Maaaan it feels good to be back! I forgot how therapeutic/healing/nurturing this hobby was!” and I love that! But I do feel like sometimes these breaks are necessary to remain passionate, determined and involved.

Having a “job” of spore wizardry, I can’t say I’ve taken the same breaks as many of you. Thankfully, I have never experienced burnout. I still wake up immensely excited to dive right into a handful of processes and experiments, share my findings with friends and feel deep gratitude for the opportunity I’m given. But I can relate to the “breaks” in other aspects of my life, usually unintentionally, and I’ve learned to appreciate them when they come back around.

For instance, with this most recent cycle of mine, I let a few things slip for a while. I’ve always been focused on meditation, yoga and exercize, but every now and then get in a little funk and re-evaluate my routine. I realized I had been skipping some of the smaller activities that were quick and easy to do and provided soooo much balance and focus to my day. Things like drinking agua right when I wake up, grounding myself on the living earth and getting some sunlight early in the morning. These things take, in total, less than 5 minutes to do, with almost no effort involved and change the vibe of the entire day!

On one hand, I may not have “felt the funk” if I had never fallen off these simple habits to begin with. Maybe you never “felt the funk” if you didn’t put the hobby on hold for a while. But on the other hand, I feel like a bit of the funk may be necessary for our growth and to dive in a little differently next time. What was once a simple routine, unfortunately sometimes mindless or on autopilot, has now become something truly invigorating and something I approach with enthusiasm and delight. Delight I say! I need de light in de morning! This helped me get back on track and feel right with my soul.

So much of the process of mushrooms has to do with connection, passion and patience. When we get to a point where we are just completing processes and checking tasks off a list….shake this, spawn that, inoculate these, transfer that…yawn, repeat…things tend to not perform too well. Even if we’re not feeling melancholy about it all, like if we’re rushing through things just to get them done or have exhausted all of our patience…not having that relationship and connection to the mycelium is absolutely noticeable in the end. There are no shortcuts or hacks to build deep, meaningful things. Relationships, fitness, business, health…MUSHROOMS. They all need to be cultivated with ultimate care, respect and most of all, patience. And sometimes we don’t get that much needed reset until we get back in it the right way and realize what we’ve been missing, which usually happens…you guessed it…right when you need it most.

So if you’re someone who feels that their creativity or enthusiasm has declined in the hobby, in your line or work or in your personal life, don’t be tough on yourself if you need to give it a break for a while or even if you accidentally put things on hold. It doesn’t mean you don’t care or have failed. You can always come back and it will likely hit you in a deeper way than if you continue without your entire heart in it. Now if you’re feeling like you’re just no match for this complicated mycology stuff and you’re GIVING UP, that’s another thing! 700 of your closest friends are all waiting to help out, offer advice and support and help you reach your goals with whatever you’re struggling with. GET IN HERE!

Very exciting new ones this week! First and foremost, one of the most popular varieties is back in the shop with a massive upgrade! Every once in a while, I accidentally let a variety go out of stock and don’t realize until it’s too late. With this one, I just wasn’t happy with the genetics, and decided to beef it up a bit before releasing it to the wild again. My friends, B+ is back for good and better than ever! I actually like these better than it’s adjacent varieties, Golden Teacher and Z-Strain 🙂 I did this with the ol PES Hawaiian a while back and introduced the same variety under it’s alternative name, Maui Platinum with a genetic upgrade and it quickly became a top favorite.

And with another very exciting announcement, a BRAND NEW one hitting the shop this week, pease welcome Ps. NATALENSIS to the library! We all thought that Ps. Ochraceocentrata was Natalensis for years, only to find out we were (accidentally) duped! But low and behold, a close friend in the Discord community sent me some TRUE NATALENSIS genetics a while back and they are now awaiting your loving embrace! For the time being, they are only available in swab packs, but may be in syringes in the near future.
