Hey toadstools!

Happy Wednesday!! Another wonderful week of life underway, and I’m thankful for all of you beautiful creatures. I had a very word heavy post last week, and am following that up with a rather light one today…all the same goodies on the back half though!

This past week, I’ve had an emphasis on listening in many ways. I think listening is a big part of awareness, and awareness is underappreciated in our culture today. There’s a lot of “noise” out there in the world. We’ve never been more connected to what’s going on literally all over this rock, which makes it easier to get distracted and keep us from focusing on what truly makes you happy. Being bombarded by what an algorithm is feeding you, designed to keep you engaged and maybe a bit fired up, prevents you from truly listening. This isn’t my request to turn everything off and go play with the butterflies (though probably not a bad idea), but just to be aware of how these things are affecting you.

What makes me happiest (aside from myco work of course) is being out in nature and spending time with friends. I’m sure you have your own personal happiness activities that make you feel enriched and alive in this busy world, and I encourage you to pursue them to the fullest extent of passion! When you’re alone, try to quiet your mind, reduce outside stimulation and be able to listen to your thoughts. Listen to your body. Be curious and ask yourself questions. If we always have some noise leeching into our space, it’s tough to be centered and hone into our psyche. And it’s not always pretty in there! But having constant outside stimulus keeps you from finding the true you- thriving, healing, and progressing in a way that’s healthy. When we tune in to ourselves and calm the mind, we can be more thoughtful and intentional rather than only reacting to what’s happening around us.

When you’re with friends and family in person or even just on the phone with them, value what they have to say. You will likely have an eye opening take away from some of these conversations, even if it doesn’t directly relate to what you were talking about. When someone is telling you a story and a similar experience pops in your head, instead of waiting for your opportunity to jump in and share your own story, just listen. Be in the moment, fully immersed in what they’re saying. If that friend came to you with a problem, sometimes what helps more than trying to offer advice or solutions is just to let them talk it through and be attentive. You can’t solve all the problems…and that’s ok. Just be there for them and give them the best things you could offer- your love and support.

With a lot of these Wednesday posts, I tend to get self-conscious about coming across like “THIS IS THE WAY!” or telling people how to live, which is not at all my intention. We all have our own path and our own way to live true to ourselves in a positive and healthy way…absolutely no judgement here on how you go about that. With most of what I spout on about, I’m really just talking to myself. Sometimes I need a pep talk, sometimes I need to buckle down and be diligent with my practice, sometimes I need to lighten up and take things less seriously. Having all this rattle around in my head is one way of remembering, but when I write it out, read it, and reflect on it, I think it sinks in and absorbs much more effectively. This is my journal and my way of listening to myself about my specific needs. I encourage you to take some time out of your week, or day if you can manage it, and jot down some of your thoughts. Just flow freely with no goal or resolution, be accepting of what comes out, and I really think it will help you process some of what might be bogging down your mind. And of course, if you need someone on the other end to LISTEN, I’m here for you and you know where to find me. We’re all just walking each other home.
