Welcome back, banana hammocks!

Real goofy banana man energy over here today! I went to the grocery store this morning and must have been a little low on potassium because I was drawn to the nanners like a magnet! I always just get the regular ol tried and true classic bananas…but today was different. Banana taste test commence! I went to the register with my collection of short, fat, yellow and red bans and struck up a conversation with the checkout lady about my exciting banana plans today. Soon enough, I had a small crowd of banana enthusiasts gathered around talking anything from plantain cooking to bread and pudding. I might try to organize a neighborhood banana cookoff (though I now realize I’m 3 weeks late for “Banana Day”)

I don’t know why, but I get some of my best thinking done just wondering around the grocery store. The first aisle I went down, I ran into a girl (rather cute, I might add) and we exchanged genuine smiles passing each other. Doesn’t take much to start that momentum of a good day! I love seeing happy smiling people out in the wild. And that got me to thinking….something as simple as a smile just made my day. Nothing needed to be said. Just knowing you’re nice and vibing to whatever you’re doing and in a good mood made an impact.

I thought to myself “That was nice. Treat other’s how you want to be treated!” Which led my thoughts to a correction: “Treat others how THEY want to be treated!”. Sure, everyone wants to see smiling faces. Well…almost everyone. I’m sure there are some who like frowns. Speaking of, in my search for “Banana Day”, I found out today is “Great American Grump Out Day”, which is explained as “giving your grumpy mood a day off today”. And that we shall! I digress…most everyone likes smiles. But there are some things that maybe don’t particularly excite me, or things that I don’t value, but I know some friends or family members really enjoy.

For instance, my parents LOVE reminiscing about my childhood. I’m an only child and I don’t think they ever recovered after I moved out. They’re also pretty friggin’ old and memory isn’t as sharp as it once was. Don’t worry…they don’t read these things. And if for some odd reason they find this at some point- mom…dad…you’re friggin’ old but I love you. Every phone call or in person visit, they will no doubt bring up some story from when I was 4 years old, and I can just feel the joy radiating from them as they recall “a happier and simpler time”. As a young adult, when I’d hear these stories for the 8174628472619947626649278378593rd time, there would be some eye rolling…some tuning out…some “make new memories and stop living in the past!” bullshit on my end. Judgement stuff! As I’ve grown to be the perfect gentleman that I am (source: mom and dad), I let them be, listened intently, and chimed in about details from the stories or just let them ramble and absorbed the love.

I identified that these were the happiest times of my parent’s lives, and even though the receiving of these stories isn’t something that necessarily made my day, I know it means a lot to them to slip away into those memories. Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and always falls right around my dad’s birthday too, so after “The Great Grocery Realization of ’25” that I had this morning, wanting to treat other’s how THEY want to be treated, I wrote a nice letter to the two of them separately, sharing some of my favorite stories of when I was younger and how much I appreciate them always looking out for me. They both LOVE hand written notes, and think they would enjoy a multi-page colorful letter over a card.

In reflection, I suppose the seed of treating other’s how they want to be treated was planted last weekend when I was dog sitting for a friend who was out of town. I gave her 2 or 3 long walks each day. I love long walks too…on the beach, in a park, in the woods…doesn’t matter. She would stop every once in a while and take 20 or 30 seconds to sniff all the sniffs that could be sniffed in a certain area. I wanted to keep going, but I put myself in the mind of precious baby Stella and realized these smells are probably the highlight of her walk. All the poo and pee…who wouldn’t want to stop and check out the excrement from other animals! I realized this was HER walk, not mine, and just let her get all the smells in. When we’d get back to the house, she would just look up at me with the biggest smile. I figured she was saying “Hey, man. Thanks for taking me all the way across town to poop. That was really nice and I appreciate it”

Totally off track here, but I wanted to mention one other realization from this week that helped me out with a few problems. I’ve been dealing with a few supply chain issues recently, where syringes and jar lids and a few other things have mysteriously become extinct through my normal channels. Ain’t nothin but a thang…I’m sure it’ll work itself out. But sometimes when I’m faced with a problem, my problem solving skills go into tunnel vision and it’s tough to effectively find solutions in that state of mind. Some of the most simple solutions are right in front of my face, but I can’t see them because of stress or heartache or whatever it may be.

I began thinking about who would be a good person to call about some of these issues. It was late at night, so I didn’t really want to try and call them until the next day, but I simply imagined how that conversation would go. Sometimes this can be a detriment, like assuming how a tough conversation would go involving a situation of conflict when it’s really not that bad when you talk it through with them. But in this case of asking for advice, it allowed me to take a step back and act like I’m not involved in the situation. I saw me and I saw this other person talking to me about it. Just that little life hack alone…you could call it channeling…allowed me the clarity of mind to effectively navigate whatever problem I had. Not that I was trying to avoid actually talking to that person (which I still did the next day), but thinking about the person in your life that would give the best advice on the topic gave me what I needed to follow through. When I’m deep into a complex problem and trying to solve it alone, sometimes I get stuck at one of the first steps and this allowed me to think it through completely with their imagined (good advice) responses and see it through to eventual solveness.

As I wrap up here, I’m looking outside at an absolutely beautiful day, and my mixed squirrel friend, Scrat, came to visit! He scurried off and seconds later, a couple lizard buddies used my railing as either a fight arena or sexy time platform….not sure, I gave them privacy after taking a pic.

When one eye is fixed on your destination, there is only on eye left to find the way.
