Description
Hericium erinaceus is an edible mushroom that belongs to the tooth fungus group. It is native all over the world in North America, Europe, and Asia. They appear on hardwoods yearly from August to November and mostly show up on dead trees, but can also survive on live ones as well. It can fruit on the same dead tree for 20 years and hypothesized that it can survive in ideal conditions for 40! Lion’s mane has been used in traditional Chinese medicines and has been used in gourmet cooking. It is said that its flavor is comparable to lobster! Though, historically, it is said to have medicinal purposes, there has been no high quality, clinical research to back this claim. Spore size is 5-7µm x 4-5µm, white in color and ellipsoid.
